Using actual bones and human tools the prehistory session explores life 4,000-14,000 years ago. The session is presented as William Buckland, a Victorian scientist who studied bones found in Kirkdale cave, North Yorkshire.

Sample full day Session

  • Introduction

  • Examine and draw bones of mammoth, wooly rhino, elk, and other animals from the ice age

  • Investigate hunting methods of early humans with real neolithic tools.

  • Mouflon hunt (running around game)

  • Design own hunting scene similar to cave paintings

Evolution and Natural Selection

In 1859 Charles Darwin published his famous book 'On the origin of Species by means of Natural Selection'. It was an instant best seller.

Based on over 20 years of research, started on his voyage around the world in HMS Beagle, the book answers many questions about evolution which had puzzled scientists for many years.

This session explains how natural selection works and how it is linked to adaptations.

  • Create a creature dressing up activity

  • Create your own, well adapted, imaginary creature (group drawing activity and presentation)

Life as a Saxon, Celt or Viking

There are many similarities between Saxons, Vikings and Celts, however, each had their own distinctive lives and battle techniques. These sessions investigate your chosen civilisation through artefacts, warfare and stories.

Each session compares your civilisation to the other two.

Sessions are run in costume as a Saxon, Celt or Viking.

  • Investigation of weapons and armour

  • Description of battle techniques

  • Battle training including battle (moving around activity)

  • Storytelling

    • Saxon (Beowulf)
